FAQ

What does Border Energy do?
Border Energy supplies natural gas to residential and commercial customers in deregulated energy markets.

How does it work?

Border Energy buys natural gas for enrolled customers and delivers it to local utility providers who distribute the natural gas to residential and commercial end-users. The natural gas is still delivered, serviced, metered, and billed by your local utility company.

Why should I use Border Energy to supply my natural gas needs?

Purchasing your natural gas from Border Energy can provide savings and mitigate risk from unusual market fluctuations in the prices of natural gas during the winter months.

Are you certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) and Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC)?

Yes – we are a registered natural gas supplier with the PUCO and IURC to supply natural gas to Columbia and NIPSCO customers.

Is your rate fixed or does it change?

We offer a unique hybrid of fixed rate pricing for the winter months and variable rate pricing during the summer months. This allows customers to take advantage of lower prices during the summer months when gas is traditionally “cheap” and protects them from unusual price spikes during the winter when demand for natural gas is much higher.

Are there any deposit requirements or membership fees?

No – we will not collect any payment up-front. There are no deposit requirements, enrollment fees, or start-up costs associated with designating Border Energy as your supplier of natural gas. Additionally, we do not charge any annual membership or account maintenance fees.

How long is the contract for this offer?

Enrollment with Border Energy constitutes a contract for a period of 12 months; however, your natural gas rate will be fixed for the term specified according to the terms of your service contract.

Do you charge an early termination fee?

We do have nominal termination fees in place should you wish to terminate your contract early.  Please refer to the terms of service for details and the specific termination fees associated with canceling.

What happens when my contract expires?

Border Energy strives to retain customers. Upon expiration of the initial contract period we will send you a letter providing you with next year’s pricing and contract terms. Your re-enrollment with Border Energy is automatic unless you respond and notify us you wish to cancel within the required time frame as specified in your terms of service agreement.

If I enroll and have Border Energy serve as my natural gas supplier, can I decide to change to another choicer supplier or return to my utility at a later date?

Yes – If for any reason you decide that you prefer having your energy supplied by your local utility company or another choice marketer you may switch subject to the terms of your Border Energy service contract, whereby you may incur an early termination fee.

Will I receive a separate bill from Border Energy in addition to my current natural gas utility bill?

No – You will have just one bill per month. Billing will still be conducted by your local utility provider and will not change. The delivery charge and taxes you have always paid to your local utility company will remain the same as well. Additionally, your payment method will not change.

How will my utility company know I've enrolled with Border Energy?

NIPSCO and Columbia Gas recognize us as an authorized supplier of natural gas through their respective customer choice programs. Once you enroll with us we notify your utility company of the change and it should be reflected on your utility bill within 1-2 billing cycles.

Does my local utility provider still deliver the natural gas or does Border Energy have to dig up my lawn to put in a new pipe?

No we don't dig up your lawn! Natural gas is still delivered through existing pipelines just as it is now. The only difference will be how much you are paying for the gas that you use!

Where will my Gas come from?

There are four main supply basins in North America: The Appalachian region, Southwestern and Mid-Continental areas in the United States and Western Canada. Border Energy buys from the producers at whatever supply area is the cheapest and transports the gas via the interstate pipeline system to your local utility provider.

How can your prices be cheaper than the utility company and so low compared to other choice suppliers?

We have a dynamic business model that keeps our overhead low. We utilize advanced market tactics seeking arbitrage opportunities instead of just index pricing natural gas. What this means is that we are typically able to pass along great savings over utility company rates to Border Energy customers!

I live in a small house or apartment and don't use much gas. Can I still enroll with Border Energy to buy my gas even though my usage is low?

Absolutely!  We strive to provide the same service and price options to residential and small commercial customers as large industrial facilities have enjoyed for years.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment is easy!  you can enroll by by first returning to our homepage and selecting your state to begin the signup process or you can call us toll-free at 877-479-4GAS (4427).  We will need your account number and meter number, both of which are printed on your current utility bill.
